Schiehallion Club

People who have climbed Schiehallion are automatic members of the Schiehallion Club.

(note - the Dunalastair Estate advises that stalking takes place from 21st Sept to 21st Oct and that for their own safety walkers should stay on the John Muir Trust path from Braes of Foss to the summit)

The table below lists, people who have climbed Schiehallion. Not all of them of course, that would be impossible, but if you know of people who should be added email Rannoch Net - Richard@rannoch.net

Rannoch School had a race up Schiehallion from time to time. In 1982 it was won by David Cropley in 59 minutes. The route starts from East Tempar or up the steep north side of Schiehallion between Loch na Daimh and Braes of Foss. David is now a University Lecturer at the University of South Australia. Contact him if you have done it more quickly or if you require some advice on fitness. His route was up the steep scree covered north slope. Sam Gleave did a fast time from East Tempar - 1 hr 10 mins.

The weather was perfect - even a trifle hot - and I spent about half an hour on the summit drinking in the views all around - The Glencoe Hills, Ben Nevis, and countless others. An experience to be treasured.

Sheila	Greenshields		3//7/2010	My daughter and I climbed to the top of Schiehallion on Saturday 3rd July 2010, exactly a year after my beloved husband, Jack died. We did it as a tribute to a wonderful husband and father who is greatly missed. My son Mark lives in America so couldn't be on the climb, but my daughter Louise was beside me all the way. I am 70 years old and this was my first ( and last!! ) Munro. This was Louise's 3rd. We put stones from Vatersay on the summit from the three of us. It was an experience we wouldn't have missed even though we had all weathers, rain, hail, wind and sunshine. The views were out of this world I am nearly crippled!

Jim	Hunter			Jim wrote - My wife Alexandra and Iclimbed the Kinloch Munro on our 21st wedding anniversary ascending on the evening of the 20th June 1996 and descending on the morning of the 21st as part of a group organised by the Kinloch Rannoch hotel adventure club for the summer solstice. My next ascent was in July 1999 which was an introduction to hill walking to my brother David who was from then on hooked,such was the beauty of Schiehallion that day, and he subsequently went on and had bagged a further 161 monro,s. Tragically, David was killed in a fall from Aonach Beag in the Nevis range in August this year and so Idecided that we would scatter his ashes where it all began for him, so myself and a family group carried out this task on Saturday the 7th of November and the Schiehallion didn't fail us, the party including myself were Brothers Ian and Ronald, sisters, Janet and Margaret and my son Ryan and nephew Gavin and Davids mate Peter Carr, and under the circumstances it was a good day.

With the telephoto lens they were able to see over to Aberfeldy and see our house! Adam is 'A Rannoch School' boy, and is fighting like mad to keep the school open and therefore wants to keep the community solvent. Let's hope we are all successful.

On Saturday 28 September 2002 myself and 25 family members, friends and 2 dogs climbed Schiehallion in memory of my husband Jimmy who was killed in a road traffic accident in June of this year. We carried with us a huge Saltire flag(which we left standing proud at the summit) and numerous bottles of Champagne to toast his life. The reason we chose Schiehallion was that was the Munro we had planned to climb the weekend he was killed. The youngest member of our group was just 4 years old and the majority of the party were "Munro Virgins". So if any subsequent walkers enquire, that is the story behind the flag. Obviously it was a very emotional trip, especially for myself but it did my heart no end of good to see the effort all those people put in in memory of a very special man, my husband Jimmy Lorimer 1963-2002. I would dearly love to through your website thank all those who took part and also thank the 3 guys at the summit who took endless photographs of our group. A big thank you. Fiona Lorimer

Southwater, West Sussex.	16/08/2001	On Thursday 16th August 2001 my two sons and myself set off from the Schiehallion Road car park at approx. 08:20 and we reached the summit at 10:58. Unfortunately the summit was wreathed in cloud and visibility was only about 100 yards so the anticipated view of Loch Rannoch eluded us. Rory	McCune	We climbed Schiehallion on 31st October 2000. We set off from the car park at 1130 and got back at 1630. We found the climb more challenging than we thought it would be, but it was certainly worth it. The peak was covered with snow and as we approached the summit, the cloud cleared to give us a great view all around. We climbed with the Renfrew family, who also come from Bangor, Northern Ireland. We met up at the Rannoch campsite on Friday 30/5/03 and climbed the mountain yesterday, Saturday 31st May 2003. We had a great day out, especially enjoying the rocky part at the top, which we found very easy to negotiate. This is because we all grew up in Wick (our family only moved South 2 years ago) and have been used to playing round the rocks of our coastline since childhood! Alana writes - Oh - if anyone found a red and black rather scrufy rucksack containing a navy & grey Bear USA pullover anorack (aged 13), a pair of navy waterproof trousers and a half eaten picnic, it belonged to my 14 year old son Ross!!- If found please email richard@rannoch.net

David	Renfrew	Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland	I climbed Schiehallion on 31st October 2000	with my son Ryan (15) and my daughter Rachel (14). We were with the McCune's who also climbed that day. It was harder than it first seemed but was well worth the view. The summit was snow-capped and shrouded in cloud which cleared for a while giving a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside. davidrenfrew@hotmail.com
