Scottish Mink Initiative
Aim: The overall aim of the Initiative is to secure multiple adjacent river catchments as areas free of breeding mink, thereby protecting nationally significant populations of water voles, salmonids, ground nesting birds and other aspects of native riparian biodiversity.
Objectives:
1) To eradicate breeding mink from the project area and prevent encroachment of mink into the far north
2) To ensure long term sustainable mink control in the project area through the coordinated and resourced transfer of responsibility for ongoing mink management to local organisations
3) To raise awareness of the project as well as the benefits of a community-based and adaptive management approach to non-native species management.
We will continue to work closely with our partners at the University of Aberdeen, providing mink carcasses for scientific research, to further our knowledge of mink in Scotland
This project is supported by the Scottish Government and the European Community Rural Aberdeenshire, Cairngorms,
Highland, Moray and Rural Tayside LEADER Programmes (2007-2013).
